History Tours

Ludlow Castle, part of the Powis Estates, is a partially ruined medieval fortress located in the town of Ludlow, in Shropshire, England. Perched on a commanding hilltop overlooking the River Teme, the castle played a vital role in the Middle Ages as a key strategic stronghold for controlling the Welsh Borders. It even served as the seat of English government in Wales at various times, highlighting its historical significance.

The Earls of Powis began leasing Ludlow Castle from the Crown in 1772, eventually purchasing the dilapidated structure in 1811. Since then, the castle has remained under the stewardship of the family, now managed by The Trustees of the Powis Castle Estate on their behalf.

Today, Ludlow Castle is open to the public, allowing visitors to explore its rich history and architectural beauty. It is recognised as a Grade I listed building and a Scheduled Ancient Monument, reflecting its importance as a heritage site. Visit Ludlow Castle website for bookings.
