These buildings were once part of the townhouse of Charles Foxe, a local MP and Secretary of the Council of the Marches. Built in 1590, it stands as one of the earliest structures entirely made of brick. The spot you’re now in used to be the house’s courtyard.

The novelty of an all-brick building attracted visitors from far and wide, admiring what was regarded as a “work of quality.” This reputation led to the courtyard being named Quality Square.

The black paving stones beneath you are called setts, which differ from cobblestones by their square-cut design. These setts are made from a durable black stone known as dhu-stone, sourced from the Clee Hills east of the town. “Dhu” comes from the Welsh word for black. This tough, igneous stone, formed by molten lava, was also used extensively in the construction of Cardiff Docks in the 1800s.
